Dating Turn-offs

by: Amy Schoen

Based upon my questionnaire for singles, the following dating “turnoffs” were prevalent:

  • Appearing nervous and anxious on the date
  • Appearing high maintenance?
  • Not mentioning that you have children upfront
  • Lying about some personal aspect prior to first meeting, i.e., truth in advertising (age, career, weight, financial situation)
  • A cheap guy: i.e., the guy expecting the gal to pay exactly half
  • Talking about your ex
  • Arrogant assumptions (Assuming your date likes everything you do!— plans, food, activities)
  • Crude remarks or insensitivity
  • Rude Behavior (Bad manners towards waiters and other service people)
  • Bragging about your salary or material stuff
  • Giving third degree questioning like you are a reporter on 60 Minutes!
  • Taking out your glass eye and other disgusting habits
  • A person not well-groomed or sloppy (self, home, car)
    • Poor shaving, bad breath, wrinkled clothes, unkempt hair, and beard, body-odor
  • Not able to hold a two way conversation (like pulling teeth!)
  • Acts like the date is a business meeting
  • Overly eager person who is over the top! (big bouquet on first date)
  • Someone not considerate of your time
    • Waits until the day of the date to finalize plans for the date
    • Coming late for the date with no good reason and no call telling you that they’d be late.
  • An overly scheduled person (Too many things planned: Both for the date and after the date)
  • Trying to get too personal on the first couple of dates. Don’t let it all hang out yet.
  • Unreliable- not following through on what you said you would do, when you said you would do it
  • Too “hands on” on the first date (before getting to know you or getting the green light!)
  • Unrealistic expectations: instant relationship (Expects there is a relationship before there really is one).
